Requirements and procedures may change. Always verify current law before beginning the purchase process.

Purchasing a firearm in New Jersey involves multiple steps, including identification requirements, background checks, and permit approvals. This guide outlines the general process for buying a handgun or long gun from a licensed dealer in New Jersey.

Step 1: Obtain a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPIC)

Before purchasing most firearms in New Jersey, residents must apply for and receive a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPIC) through their local police department or the New Jersey State Police.

The FPIC is generally required for the purchase of rifles, shotguns, and handgun ammunition.

Step 2: Apply for a Handgun Purchase Permit (If Buying a Handgun)

In addition to an FPIC, purchasing a handgun in New Jersey requires a separate Permit to Purchase a Handgun (PPH). A permit is required for each individual handgun purchased.

  • One permit is required per handgun.
  • Permits are issued electronically.
  • Permits are subject to statutory validity periods.

Step 3: Purchase Through a Licensed Dealer (FFL)

All firearm purchases in New Jersey must be conducted through a federally licensed firearms dealer (FFL). Private sales are also required to be processed through a licensed dealer.

Browse our directory of New Jersey gun shops to locate licensed dealers near you.

Step 4: Complete the Required Background Check

Firearm purchases require a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), administered in New Jersey by the State Police.

The dealer will submit the background check request at the time of purchase. Approval must be received before the firearm can be transferred.

Step 5: Approval and Transfer

Once the background check is approved and all statutory requirements are satisfied, the firearm may be transferred to the purchaser by the licensed dealer.

New Jersey law may impose limitations on handgun purchase frequency and other conditions.

Important Purchase Limitations

New Jersey imposes statutory limits on certain firearm purchases and configurations. Buyers should be aware of the following restrictions:

  • Handgun Purchase Limit: Generally limited to one handgun purchase within a 30-day period (commonly referred to as the “One Gun a Month” rule), subject to statutory exceptions.
  • Magazine Capacity: Detachable magazines are generally limited to a maximum capacity of 10 rounds under New Jersey law.
  • Prohibited Firearms: Certain firearms classified as “assault firearms” under N.J.S.A. 2C:39-1w are prohibited.
  • Feature Restrictions: Semi-automatic rifles and other firearms must comply with New Jersey feature restrictions.
  • Federal Requirements: Federal firearm laws and ATF regulations apply in addition to New Jersey statutes.

These restrictions are defined under New Jersey statute and are subject to legislative amendment and court review.

Transporting Your Firearm After Purchase

After purchasing a firearm, transportation must comply with New Jersey statutory requirements under N.J.S.A. 2C:39-6. Firearms must generally be unloaded and secured when transported under exemption provisions.
